Hunger Busters Appeal
Hunger Busters Appeal
The Thai border town of Mae Sot is home to thousands of Burmese refugees, about one third of them children. Children flee Burma because their lives are in danger. Some have had parents shot or killed by landmines. Families send them to Thailand in the hope of safety and education, as a passport to a better life. While the children are safe in boarding houses or with their families, they have very little to eat. Over half are severely malnourished. One in ten suffer from acute, or wasting malnutrition.
Malnourished children cannot concentrate at school. Some are left permanently disabled. A proper school lunch is the best first step towards giving these children a chance in life.
This is where the Hunger Busters Appeal comes in.
It costs just £40 to give a child a nutritious and sustaining lunch every school day for a year. During 2011 we will spend at least £60,000 to give lunch to at least 1500 children on every school day. That’s 300,000 lunches!
Where possible we supplement these lunches with sustainable schemes like mushroom sheds for £400 and catfish tanks for £88, which can deliver much-needed protein very efficiently.
You can help us by sponsoring lunches. A standard £18 monthly sponsorship will pay for lunch for five children every month.
Some of this money has been raised through our ‘Big Give’ Christmas appeal, but we need more.
